GOVERNOR PERRY

Remarks by Gov. Rick Perry on Election
Night
After traveling to more than 100 cities, attending more than 400
events, and visiting with thousands of Texans over the course
of this year, I am deeply humbled the people of Texas have chosen
me to be their governor for four more years. It is a blessing
and an honor to be governor of the greatest state in the nation,
and to do so with my wife, Anita, and my children, Griffin and
Sydney, by my side. There is nothing more invigorating than campaigning
across this state and visiting with Texans about their hopes,
concerns and dreams for the future. In the final analysis, campaigns
are not about the candidates, they are about the people. Tonight
the people have spoken, and I want you to know I have listened.
To my opponents and their families, I wish the very best. We may
have had different ideas, but we each one loves Texas very much.
And I respect the sacrifice you have made to run for this office.
I want to say something to every Texan that may be listening in
tonight: whether you voted for me or another candidate, for the
next four years it is my intention to serve you with humility,
recognizing that Texas is better when we all work together. No
party controls the government; it belongs to the people. It belongs
to the single mom working to make ends meet, the young couple
looking to own their first home without being taxed out of it,
the children who come from broken families and failing schools.
It belongs to the student looking to be the first in his or her
family to go to college, the recovering addict trying to leave
behind past despair to find future hope, the child who faces the
future without a parent or a guardian. To each and every person
looking for a future that is better than the past, whether you
call yourself a Democrat, Republican or Independent, for the next
four years I pledge to be your governor. When we walk off this
stage tonight, we leave behind past acrimony and partisan rivalry
for a greater good, which is to build a Texas of limitless possibility.
Anything is possible in a Texas with great schools, safe communities
and good jobs. We will continue to invest in our classrooms. We
will dedicate the resources needed to help secure our border.
And we will continue to rely on jobs and economic innovation-not
higher taxes-to generate revenue for government. How do I know
we can do this together? Because we have before. With the support
of homeowners, employers and a former Democrat opponent of mine,
we passed the largest tax cut in history, increased teacher pay
and took school funding out of the courts. It was a bipartisan
success, with more than 90 percent of the legislature, Republicans
and Democrats alike, voting to cut taxes and increase school funding.
I remain as optimistic about our future as I ever have. Perhaps
it's the West Texas farmer in me who always knew a good rain was
around the corner, and who always had faith that people would
pull together. We have great challenges in this state. We have
more than 600,000 schoolchildren that speak English as a second
language, many of whom arrive in our schools behind. Too many
families and small businesses cannot afford health insurance.
And our border is too easily exploited by drug traffickers, human
smugglers and criminal organizations. But no challenge is insurmountable.
And I still have faith that our people will pull together. For
those of us who have been blessed with strong families, good jobs
and financial security, I want to say this: our blessings are
never complete so long as they remain our own. Texas still needs
men and women who "stand in the gap" for the meek and the vulnerable,
and who look beyond their own lives to answer a calling greater
than self. Today's victory must be about preparing for tomorrow's
Texas. We must pull together, stand on the courage of our convictions,
and extend opportunity to those who live in its shadow. The campaign
is over, but our work has just begun.
Thank you, God bless you, and God bless Texas.

New Generation/College Republican Women
In 2005, Indiana FRW launched New Generation Republican Women
(NGRW) to give young Republican women a voice in the community
and in statewide politics. This year, the NFRW has taken Indiana's
program nationwide. The goal of this program is to help states
establish New Generation Republican Women's clubs, which are geared
toward women up to 40 years old, and College Republican Women's
clubs, which are established on campuses and are led by and for
students.

Travis County Republican Party
News
Chairman’s Message November 10, 2006 First, I want to
thank all of you for the work you did on behalf of our candidates.
The phoning, door knocking, contributing, and other volunteering
made an important difference to our party and our candidates.
It’s great to be a Texas Republican. Republicans are in firm control
of all 23 statewide offices. We retained our three sitting judges
on the 3rd Court of Appeals. Congressmen Smith and McCaul go back
to Congress. It is great to be a Texas Republican And there were
some disappointments in losing a couple of close local races.
But I have been in politics too long to worry about the past.
We Republicans will always have a great future. Since I worked
in my first Congressional Campaign in 1962 for a young pilot who
just got out of the Navy named Donald Rumsfeld, I have seen the
ebb and flow. In 1988 we had 2 Republican State Representatives
in Travis and another we shared with Hays. After the 1990 election,
we had none. In 1998, 4 of the 5 Hays County Commissioners were
Democrats and before Tuesday night’s election 4 of 5 were Republicans.
Now it is back to 4 of 5 Democrats. Dallas County went Democratic
Tuesday night for the first time in more than 20 years. In politics,
nothing is more permanent than change. George Will pointed out
yesterday that in the first 160 years of our Republic, the Congress
changed parties on average once every 8 years. Nationally, some
of members of Congress lost their way. Reformers of 1994 were
the insiders of 2006. Some sold their souls for money, other for
earmarks and others for glory in liberal media. And as a result
our party took a beating. But if you look at the ballot propositions
around the country, conservatism won out almost unanimously, affirmative
action ended in Michigan, property rights positions passed in
numerous states, traditional marriage was supported in 7 of the
8 states where it was on the ballot, and Arizona voted to make
English the state language. We are now on the other side. Many
Congressional races were decided by very few votes and the Democrats
who won will be hard pressed to keep them with no Bob Ney, or
Duke Cunningham or Jack Abramoff or Mark Foley to flaunt or to
use to smear their Republican opponent. The problems in Iraq ,
by themselves, did not defeat us. Our own misdeeds, conceit and
movement from what we have always stood for did. So back to the
basics. We are the party that freed the slaves, gave women the
right to vote, ended the cold war and defended America against
Islamo-fascists. We are the party of accountability and life,
family and faith, and real equal opportunity for everyone. In
the exit polls on Tuesday, 32% of the voters said they were conservative
and only 20% said they were liberal, so we have a tremendous opportunity
in the next two years to retake the lost ground. Our enemies may
bask in the sun of this temporary Democrat ascendancy, but we
will be back in 2008. I hope you will continue to be active over
the next two years to help us make sure the next Speaker of the
House and Majority Leader of the Senate has an R beside their
name and Travis County has more local Republican officials. Thank
you again. Alan Sager, JD, PhD Chairman, Travis County Republican
Party
